Jonathan, Founder & Head Knife Instructor
There's nothing like a nice day outdoors with my friends.
FOUNDER / HEAD KNIFE INSTRUCTOR
TEACHES: Knife, axe, shuriken and spike/nail throwing
DAY JOB: Corneal Recovery Technician
Reserve Police Officer
Emergency Response Chaplain
HOBBIES/FAVORITES: Huge Star Wars fan, loves Admirals hockey, martial arts, writing, sketching and absolutely loves teaching.
Jonathan is married to his high school sweetheart, Kirsten. Jonathan and Kirsten love hockey and playing catch. But you will also find them stick-fighting in their back yard as they are both avid martial artists. Jonathan used teaching martial arts to get to know Kirsten with the hope of asking her out. Read Kirsten's bio to find out what happened on her second lesson.
Jonathan's Dad started him out throwing pocket knives when Jonathan was about 7 years old. Martial arts introduced Jonathan to stick weapons and shuriken (throwing stars).
Jonathan proudly serves as a part-time reserve police officer and says he enjoys the accuracy and concentration needed to study knife throwing and martial arts.
Jonathan began developing a team of instructors in 2006 to offer hands on instuction mixed with demonstrations and here we are.
"If you hit the bull's-eye, it shows you can. If you hit it again, it proves you meant to." ~ Jonathan Winski
David, Head Axe Instructor
Showin' how it's done!
CO-FOUNDER / HEAD AXE INSTRUCTOR
TEACHES: Axe, knife and shuriken throwing
DAY JOB: Electrician, Firefighter
HOBBIES/FAVORITES: Wisconsin Scottish, hockey fan, bowling
David and his wife Dena have two beautiful children, Elise and Jonathan. Elise, it turns out, is quite an "Ace" with throwing knives as you can see in our photo album. Does this mean little Jonathan (who ain't so little) is going to take up axe throwing? Hmm... we'll see.
David is very involved with the Wisconsin Scottish. And for goodness sake call it a kilt! The man throws axes - hard! Seriously, David puts on quite a demo with very powerful throws; sometimes sending chunks of 6 inch thick tree rounds flying. ...and that's while hitting mini 1 1/2 inch playing cards with his axes! Power and finesse splits cards and makes instant salad out of fyling heads of lettuce in mid air!
When not working as an electrician, he serves as a Firefighter with great pride. David also evaluates and buys all our axes. Now that's a fun job to have! He and Jonathan have been best friends since high school and are both highly competitive. If David splits a head of lettuce mid-air with an axe, Jonathan has to try to pin it to the board with a knife. They seem to have the most fun when seeing if the other can match a move or trick.
Jason, Instructor
Knife Instructor Jason teaches how to line up with your target.
INSTRUCTOR / WEBMASTER
TEACHES: Knife and axe throwing
DAY JOB: Graphic Artist
HOBBIES/FAVORITES: Movie prop replicas, movie production
Jason has undoubtably been bitten by the knife bug as he is constantly trying new variations of throwing knives. He has progressed rapidly over a short time but focus has developed his skill quickly. He has definately earned the right to teach. Sometimes in practice he doesn't give himself enough credit. But whenever Jonathan challenges him to a target duel Jason always does far more than hold his own.
Even though he is soft spoken, it takes a great deal of skill to bring your talent to bear when called on spontaneously. Jason is our "sleeper" instructor, quiet but always encouraging and successful. He truly understands what it means to stick with something and keeping a positive attitiude!
Jason, like our new member, Rick is also a film maker. We just hope their first block-buster involves a small group of knife and axe throwers... hint, hint.
Kirsten, Instructor
That's right boys, she just buried all of 'em in a log round 20 feet away! That's 9 axes all in one target slightly larger than a dinner plate!
INSTRUCTOR
TEACHES: Axe and knife throwing
DAY JOB: Business Manager
HOBBIES/FAVORITES: Hockey, loves studying architecture, playing catch, stick fighting
Kirsten graduated with a double degree in pyschology and communications so Jonathan ain't got a shot at lyin'. During the day, Kirsten manages a large regional business; developing professional managers and enjoys marketing. Training is her specialty and passion.
During events, Kirsten enjoys "working the crowd" and jumping in to instruct those who are especially apprehensive and say, "I could never throw an axe; I'd probably just miss anyway." Everyone Kirsten teaches is hitting the target in minutes. She's very positive and encouraging and prefers helping others learn to throw rather than participate in demonstrations.
Kirsten is also known for playing on Jonathan and David's egos and fires them up for impromptu competitions. It doesn't take a lot to get those two to compete but Kirsten really comes up with some challenging shots that she knows they haven't tried before or practiced.
Kirsten met her husband, Jonathan, in high school where he tried to use martial arts as a reason to ask her out. On Kirsten's second lesson she actually dislocated Jonathan's knee completely! Way to try and "woo" a girl Jonny! Did we mention Jonathan was the instructor?
Kirsten loves studying architecture and spontaneous art projects. Between lunch and dinner you may find the living room a new color with fresh stencils or the driveway re-tarred and coated!
Robyn, Instructor
Careful fellas! She's married to another instructor, Jason.
INSTRUCTOR
Prefers knife and shuriken throwing
DAY JOB: Board Certified Optician
HOBBIES/FAVORITES: Loves fairies
Robyn is very outgoing and is going to be a fantastic instructor very soon. Very attuned to fine detail, Robyn is honing the finer points of evaluating technique. We are sure Robyn will probably join Jonathan in a shuriken demo as she is quite fond of the ancient projectiles. Next year we may just have a new doubles demo!
Robyn writes poetry and loves fairies and fairy lore. An easy fit into any Renaissance Faire, this blade throwing maiden will keep any squire on his toes!
Glenn
AAARGGGHHH!!!! ... eh-hem, "I mean, hey good lookin'. Would you like to throw some axes?"
Glenn is our newest instructor and are we glad to have him!!! Glen shows natural talent, not only in axe and knife throwing but as a teacher as well. Many new learners have begun coming back to Glen to have their second, third, ... lesson! WELCOME Glenn!!!
